What I Stopped Offering as a Family Photographer (And Why)

Brother and sister smiling at each other during a family photography session in a St. Louis park.

As a St. Louis family photographer, I’ve learned that creating beautiful family photos isn’t about doing more. It’s about focusing on what matters most.

Over the years, I’ve made changes to my family photography business that have improved both the client experience and the quality of my work. Some of those changes meant letting go of things I thought I was supposed to offer.

The result? More meaningful photos, more relaxed families, and an experience that feels less like a chore and more like a fun afternoon together.

Here’s what I stopped offering and why it makes such a difference.

1. I Stopped Rushing Family Photography Sessions

Family photography should never feel like a race against the clock.

As a mom of three boys, I know that getting everyone dressed, out the door, and smiling at the same time is no small accomplishment. Add a camera, and things can get interesting quickly!

That’s why I believe great family photography in St. Louis starts with giving families room to relax.

Instead of rushing through a list of poses, I allow time for kids to warm up, personalities to shine, and genuine connections to happen.

Sometimes that means playing a silly game. Other times, it means taking a quick break or letting your toddler explore.

And yes, sometimes it means making ridiculous animal noises to get a laugh. Whatever works!

When families feel comfortable, their photos become more natural and authentic. Rather than worrying about perfect smiles, we can focus on capturing the moments that make your family unique.

2. I Stopped Forcing Every Family Into the Same Poses

Every family is different. Your family photos should reflect that.

Some families love classic portraits with everyone looking at the camera. Others prefer candid moments filled with movement, laughter, and snuggles.

Fortunately, you don’t have to choose just one style.

My approach to natural family photography combines gentle posing with candid moments. I’ll guide you when needed, but I’ll also give your family space to interact naturally.

Don’t worry if you’ve never taken professional photos before. Most people aren’t sure what to do with their hands when someone points a camera at them!

I’ll help you feel comfortable while making sure your photos look beautiful.

Most importantly, your kids don’t have to behave like tiny adults. Their personalities are part of what makes your family special.

3. I Stopped Focusing on Quantity Instead of Quality

More photos don’t always mean better photos.

Instead of focusing on taking as many pictures as possible, I concentrate on creating a thoughtful collection of images that tells your family’s story.

That includes the big smiles, of course. However, it also includes the little moments you might otherwise miss.

Think about the way your youngest holds your hand, the way your kids laugh together, or the quiet moment when you pull your child close.

These are the details that make family photographs meaningful.

As a St. Louis family photographer, my goal is to create images that go beyond simply documenting what everyone looked like that day. I want your photos to remind you how this season of life felt.

That takes intention, patience, and an eye for the moments happening between the poses.

4. I Stopped Expecting Every Moment to Be Perfect

Let’s be honest. Real family life isn’t always picture-perfect.

Kids get silly. Toddlers have opinions. Someone might refuse to wear the shoes you picked out. And there’s almost always at least one person who would rather be doing something else.

The good news? Your family doesn’t need to be perfect to have beautiful photos.

In fact, some of my favorite images happen when families stop worrying about getting everything right.

I love beautiful locations, gorgeous natural light, and outfits that photograph well. However, I also love the unexpected laughter, spontaneous hugs, and silly moments that happen when everyone relaxes.

Those little imperfections are often what make your photographs feel authentic.

My job is to help you feel comfortable, guide you when necessary, and capture the connections that matter most.

5. I Stopped Thinking the Experience Ended After the Photo Session

Creating beautiful family photographs is only part of the experience.

After your session, you still need to decide which images you love most and how you want to enjoy them.

I understand how busy family life gets. Between school, sports, work, and approximately 47 other activities, finding time to make decisions can be difficult!

That’s why I want the experience to feel thoughtful from start to finish.

From helping you prepare for your session to guiding you through choosing your favorite photographs, my goal is to make the process feel manageable and enjoyable.

After all, your photographs deserve more than a forgotten folder on your computer.

Whether you choose digital images, create an album, or display your favorite portraits in your home, these memories are meant to be enjoyed.

What This Means for Your St. Louis Family Photography Session

These changes have helped me focus on what matters most: creating a relaxed experience and meaningful photographs for the families I work with.

When you book a family photography session with me, you can expect:

  • A relaxed experience: There is room for kids to warm up and be themselves.
  • Natural posing: I’ll guide you without making every moment feel stiff or forced.
  • Genuine connections: We focus on the relationships and little moments that make your family unique.
  • A personalized approach: Your session reflects your family’s personalities instead of following a one-size-fits-all formula.
  • Help choosing your images: I’ll guide you through the process so you can select photographs you’ll love for years to come.

Most importantly, you don’t need perfectly behaved children or modeling experience to get beautiful family photos.

You just need to show up as you are.

I’ll take care of the rest.

Ready to Book Your Family Photography Session?

If you’ve been putting off family photos because your schedule is packed, your kids are unpredictable, or you feel awkward in front of the camera, I get it.

As a mom of three boys, I know that getting everyone ready and out the door can feel like an Olympic event.

That’s why my approach to family photography in Chesterfield and St. Louis, Missouri, is all about making the experience relaxed, fun, and meaningful.

You deserve to be in the photos with your kids. And years from now, you’ll be glad you made the time.
