Your kids don’t have to cooperate perfectly for you to get beautiful family photos. In fact, some of my favorite family photos happen when kids are being completely themselves.
If you’re searching for a St. Louis family photographer and you’re already worried about your kids behaving during your family photo session, I want you to know something:
You are not the only one.
Parents often tell me they’re worried their kids won’t smile, won’t sit still, or simply won’t cooperate for family pictures. And as a mom myself, I get it.
But here’s the good news: your kids don’t need to be perfect for your family photos to be beautiful.
What If My Kids Don’t Cooperate for Family Photos?
First, take a deep breath.
Kids are kids.
They move. They get distracted. They get silly. They change their minds. Someone needs a snack. Someone suddenly has approximately 47 questions that absolutely cannot wait.
That’s normal.
When you book a family photography session in St. Louis, you don’t need to arrive with perfectly behaved children. My approach is relaxed and lightly guided, which means I’m not expecting everyone to stand still and smile at the camera for an hour.
Instead, we’ll let your kids move, play, interact and be themselves.
And I’ll photograph what happens along the way.
You Don’t Have to Force Your Kids to Smile
One of the biggest mistakes parents can make before family photos is putting too much pressure on their kids.
“You better smile.”
“You need to behave.”
“We’re taking pictures, so listen!”
I completely understand why parents do it. You spent money on family photos, everyone got dressed, and you just want one good picture.
But the more pressure kids feel, the harder it can be to get genuine expressions.
Instead, I want your kids to have fun.
We’ll use movement, games, silly noises, tickles, jokes and whatever else helps your family relax.
Sometimes I’ll make ridiculous animal noises behind my camera.
Yes, I have absolutely made a fool of myself for a photograph.
And I’m completely okay with it.
What Happens During a Relaxed Family Photo Session?
I don’t want your family photo session to feel like an hour of posing.
Instead, I’ll give you simple direction while leaving room for your family to interact naturally.
Depending on your kids, we might:
- Walk together
- Play a game
- Snuggle
- Tell jokes
- Run around
- Give piggyback rides
- Tickle each other
- Explore the location
- Take a snack break
- Let the kids have a little space to reset
The goal is to create natural family photos, not photographs where everyone looks like they’re holding their breath waiting for the session to end.
What If My Child Is Really Having a Bad Day?
It happens.
Sometimes a child simply isn’t feeling it.
Maybe they’re tired. Maybe they’re overwhelmed. Maybe they don’t want to participate.
We don’t panic.
We can take a break, change what we’re doing, move to another part of the location, or give them a few minutes to reset.
I’ve photographed enough families to know that forcing a moment usually doesn’t make it better.
Sometimes the best thing we can do is stop trying so hard.
And that’s often when the magic happens.
What Should I Bring to My Family Photo Session?
A few simple things can make your outdoor family photography session much easier.
I recommend bringing:
- Water
- A favorite snack
- Wipes or tissues
- A hairbrush
- Any necessary kid essentials
- A favorite comfort item if your child needs one
You don’t have to bring a giant bag of props.
In fact, I usually prefer to keep things simple.
Your family is the important part.
What If My Kids Are Different Ages?
This is one of my favorite parts of family photography.
A family with a toddler, an elementary-aged child and a teenager is going to interact completely differently than a family with three toddlers.
And that’s okay.
I don’t expect every child to participate in exactly the same way.
With older kids, I may give them more independence or let them help with younger siblings.
With younger kids, we may use more movement and games.
With teenagers, sometimes the trick is simply making sure they don’t feel like they’re being forced to perform for the camera.
The session can adapt to your family.
What Should Kids Wear for Fall Family Photos?
If you’re planning fall family photos in St. Louis, choosing outfits that allow your kids to move comfortably is just as important as choosing colors you love.
Think about:
- Layers
- Textures
- Comfortable shoes
- Coordinating rather than perfectly matching
- Colors that work well together
- Clothing your kids can actually move in
You don’t want your child uncomfortable in an outfit they hate before we even start.
And if you’re still trying to figure out what everyone should wear, that’s something I can help with, too.
The Goal of Family Photography Isn’t Perfection
This is the part I really want parents to remember.
I’m not trying to create a gallery where everyone looks perfectly posed in every photograph.
I’m looking for your family.
The way your daughter grabs your hand.
The way your son laughs when Dad picks him up.
The look your kids give each other when they think nobody is watching.
The little moments between siblings.
The way you look at your kids.
Those are the photographs you’ll want to remember.
Because someday, they’re going to be bigger.
The toddler who wouldn’t sit still will be a teenager.
The kid who rolled his eyes at family photos will be the one you miss having in your arms.
And those imperfect little moments?
They’re exactly what you’ll want to have.
So, What If Your Kids Don’t Cooperate?
We’ll roll with it.
Really.
You don’t need to arrive with perfectly behaved children. You don’t need to practice smiling. And you definitely don’t need to apologize if your child has a meltdown.
That’s life.
My job as your St. Louis family photographer is to create a relaxed experience, help everyone feel comfortable, and find the beautiful moments in between the chaos.
Your job is simply to show up with your people.
We’ll take care of the rest. ❤️
